Systems Engineer

Salary: CHF 80’000 - 110’000 per year

Requirements:

  • Have completed higher education in computer science (HES) or possess equivalent training/experience
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in system engineering within complex and heterogeneous IT environments
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approaches and tools, particularly Ansible
  • Strong programming skills, including Python, shell scripting, and PowerShell
  • Proficiency in the three main operating systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Experience with container technologies, in production or research environments
  • Strong knowledge of software license management
  • Experience working with IT governance, security, and compliance requirements
  • Solid experience handling large storage systems and working with common storage access protocols
  • Practical experience with data center infrastructure, including racks, servers, networking equipment, and hardware lifecycle management
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines supporting infrastructure and deployments
  • Thorough understanding of the OSI network model
  • Nice-to-Haves:
  • Experience working in a research context, particularly with workloads
  • Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentoring colleagues, or managing infrastructure projects
  • Track record of leading complex deployment assignments
  • Understanding of Swiss and European data protection laws and the Swiss legal framework

Responsibilities:

  • Enable and support research by driving modern infrastructure approaches and improved deployment standards
  • Act as a 3rd-level expert for complex issues, collaborating with skilled peers to deliver robust, scalable services
  • Implement Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, emphasizing reliability and sustainability
  • Manage EPFL-wide shared storage services, including access management and service enablement
  • Design and improve deployment workflows supported by scalable server and infrastructure
  • Provide expert-level consulting to propose sustainable, long-term solutions for STI units
  • Manage software license services, ensuring reliable and compliant access for STI users
  • Offer expertise on storage architectures, backup, access control, and best practices
  • Serve as the technical reference for IT access control within the School of Engineering
  • Act as a liaison for complex incidents, including IT security, between STI and EPFLs central IT
