Backend Software Engineer - Data Processing Platform

Salary: CHF 90'000 - 120'000 per year

Requirements:

• We require a Masters Degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field.
• We require proven solid experience in software development using Java.
• We require hands-on experience with Python.
• We require strong knowledge of the Spring Framework ecosystem.
• We require practical experience with concurrent and multi-threaded programming.
• We require a good understanding of distributed systems and JVM internals.
• We require experience applying software quality assurance practices and related tools.
• We require familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated build, test, and deployment workflows.
• We consider experience with cloud-native technologies, including Kubernetes, highly desirable; familiarity with Knative or a similar framework is an asset.
• We require spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Responsibilities:

• We design, develop, test, and maintain the Data Processing Platform used for offline and online analysis of accelerator and beam data.
• We build reliable and scalable backend services supporting the control, monitoring, and analysis of particle accelerators and equipment.
• We participate in the validation and evolution of the platform architecture.
• We develop production-ready integrations.
• We contribute to the modernisation of existing services through the migration of legacy systems to the Data Processing Platform.
• We design, develop, and maintain mission-critical software components for the Data Processing Platform.
• We conduct technological watch and evaluate emerging technologies to ensure high-quality solutions aligned with CERNs evolving accelerator controls environment.
• We collaborate with stakeholders, including end users, Product Owners, and infrastructure providers, to gather requirements and define solutions.
• We support accelerator equipment experts, physicists, and operation crews by improving and optimising their experience with the platform and associated software services.

You will join the Agile Data Processing team within the CERN Controls Software Services group, working in a hybrid role on software engineering and IT for our Data Processing Platform. We offer a limited duration contract of 5 years, 40 hours per week, job grade 6-7, with the possibility to extend the contract up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure.
